Generative AI: A Revolution Faster Than the Internet and Computers
At Cloud Levante, as specialists in artificial intelligence, we closely monitor the impact of emerging technologies on the market. Recently, a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) revealed surprising data on the adoption of generative AI, showing how this technology is rapidly transforming the way we work and live.
Unprecedented Adoption
The report, conducted by Alexander Bick, Adam Blandin, and David Deming, highlights that by August 2024:
- 39.4% of U.S. adults aged 18 to 64 were already using generative AI at work or at home.
- 32% had used it at least once during the week prior to the survey.
- 10.6% reported using it daily.
In just two years, this technology has far surpassed the adoption speed of other technological revolutions, such as the internet (20% in two years) and personal computers (20% in three years).
Use in the Workplace
- 28% of workers use generative AI, with 10.9% using it daily.
- The most common tasks include writing (38.4%), administration (26.8%), and data analysis (23%).
- The leading occupations in adoption are computing/mathematics (49.6%) and management (49%), but even 22% of blue-collar workers are using it.
This means that the professions with the highest adoption of generative AI are those related to computing and mathematics (49.6%), and management (49%). Nearly half of individuals in these fields use it in their work.
However, it’s also noteworthy that 22% of workers in manual or physical jobs, such as those in industry, construction, or transportation, are also using this technology. This shows that its use is not limited to intellectual or office jobs but is beginning to extend to other practical and technical sectors.
Demographics and Education
Generative AI is gaining traction especially among:
- Young people under 40, with an adoption rate of 34.5%.
- People with university degrees, with a usage rate of 40.9%, compared to 19.6% among those without higher education.
Potential for Productivity
Although only between 0.5% and 3.5% of work hours are assisted by generative AI, it is estimated that it could increase productivity by up to 0.875 percentage points, according to previous studies.
What Does This Mean for Your Business?
Generative AI is not just a tool for programmers or tech experts. Its use extends to administrative, creative, and managerial tasks, making it accessible across a wide variety of industries and roles.
